DETROIT, MI — The Tigers moved within one win of a World Series championship Wednesday night, defeating the Dodgers 7-5 on a walk-off two-run homer by Riley Greene at Comerica Park.

After watching Los Angeles even the series with back-to-back wins, Detroit responded with its most explosive offensive performance since the opening games in Los Angeles. The Tigers launched four home runs, but still needed late heroics after the Dodgers erased a three-run deficit.

The scoring started immediately. Detroit homered in both the first and second innings, but the Dodgers answered right back. Shohei Ohtani connected for a solo shot in the first, and Andy Pages drove in Mookie Betts in the second to keep the game tied.

The Tigers retook the lead in the third. Parker Meadows singled and stole second before Jahmai Jones singled him to third. Gleyber Torres then lined a single to center to score Meadows and put Detroit ahead 3-2.

Torres struck again in the fifth, crushing a two-run homer to right that extended the Tigers’ lead to 5-2 and gave the home crowd reason to believe.

But no lead is comfortable against the Dodgers.

Los Angeles chipped away in the seventh when Teoscar Hernández grounded into a double play that allowed Betts to score from third. Then came the ninth.

With one out, Betts drew a walk against Tigers closer Matt Svanson. Two batters later, Kyle Tucker launched a game-tying two-run homer to left, stunning the crowd and knotting the score at 5-5. To his credit, Svanson regrouped and retired the next three hitters to send the game to the bottom of the inning.

There would be no extra innings.

Dodgers reliever Tanner Scott recorded the first two outs of the ninth before Javier Báez singled to left. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch then called upon Greene as a pinch hitter, and the All-Star delivered the biggest swing of Detroit’s season.

Greene turned on a fastball and sent it 339 feet down the right-field line. The ball clipped the inside of the foul pole and bounced into the seats for a walk-off two-run homer, sending Comerica Park into a frenzy.

The victory gives Detroit a 3-2 lead in the World Series and puts the Tigers one win away from another championship. The series now shifts back to Los Angeles, where the Dodgers will try to force a Game 7 and the Tigers will look to finish the job.
