Week 3: Packers escape with late field goal, hand Falcons first loss

Atlanta Falcons, NFL26

GREEN BAY, WI — The Green Bay Packers needed a last-second field goal to avoid a home defeat, edging the Atlanta Falcons 35-33 in a Thursday Night Football battle at Lambeau Field.

Green Bay appeared headed for the win late in the fourth quarter with a 32-27 lead until Falcons linebacker Divine Deablo intercepted Jordan Love and returned it for a touchdown. Atlanta failed on the ensuing 2-point conversion but still grabbed a 33-32 lead with 1:04 remaining.

That was enough time for Love to respond.

The Packers quarterback connected with Matthew Golden for a 60-yard completion that moved Green Bay to the Atlanta 2-yard line. Three plays later, Trey Smack converted the go-ahead field goal, putting the Packers back in front 35-33 with nine seconds remaining.

Atlanta still had one final opportunity.

Starting from the 35-yard line, Tua Tagovailoa connected with Drake London for 23 yards, and London got out of bounds at the Green Bay 42. That gave Nick Folk a chance to win it with a 59-yard field goal on the final play.

Folk’s kick had the distance but sailed left, allowing the Packers to escape with the two-point victory.

As it stands…

The Packers improved to 2-1, while the Falcons (2-1) suffered their first loss of the season. Atlanta returns home to face the New Orleans Saints on Monday Night Football, while Green Bay travels to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.
