OXFORD, MS — It was over almost before it started.

Ole Miss, ranked No. 5 entering the matchup, dismantled LSU 47-17 and climbed three spots to No. 2 in the latest rankings. The loss sent the Tigers tumbling eight spots to No. 14.

The Rebels controlled the game with a punishing rushing attack that produced five touchdowns. Junior Kewan Lacy and sophomore Mitch Anderson each scored twice on the ground, with Lacy breaking loose for 170 rushing yards. Kicker Lucas Carneiro added four field goals to help turn the SEC matchup into a rout.

LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt wasn’t the problem. He threw for 315 yards and two touchdowns against one interception, but the Tigers received little help from their running game. Junior Caden Durham was held to just 42 yards on 12 carries.

LSU’s biggest problem was sustaining drives. The Tigers converted just 1 of 14 opportunities on third down, repeatedly handing possession back to an Ole Miss offense that took full advantage.

The victory kept Ole Miss undefeated at 3-0 overall and 1-0 in SEC play, while LSU suffered its first loss and dropped to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Ole Miss takes on Florida in Week 4 as the Rebels look to protect their new No. 2 ranking. LSU, meanwhile, faces an uphill battle against No. 4 Texas A&M, whose junior quarterback Marcel Reed is already among the early names in the Heisman Trophy discussion.
