WACO, TX — Baylor returned home after a four-game road trip in which it won three contests, but the Bears let a golden opportunity slip away Saturday, blowing a two-touchdown fourth-quarter lead in a heartbreaking 49-47 overtime loss to No. 11 Kansas at McLane Stadium.

The defeat was a painful one for Baylor, which appeared to be in complete control entering the final quarter.

The Bears held a 38-24 advantage after three quarters, but their defense had no answer for the Jayhawks down the stretch.

Kansas began its comeback with 9:02 remaining in the fourth quarter when quarterback David McComb threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Harry Stewart, trimming Baylor’s lead to 38-31. Then, with just 55 seconds left, McComb connected with Carl Van Buren on a 5-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 38-38 and force overtime.

The teams traded touchdowns through the early overtime periods before the game reached the sudden-death two-point conversion stage.

Both offenses converted on their first attempts, extending the marathon. Baylor then came up empty on its next try, opening the door for Kansas. The Jayhawks capitalized, converting their ensuing two-point attempt to complete the remarkable comeback and escape with the victory.

The loss dealt a significant blow to Baylor’s hopes of reaching the Big 12 Championship Game, dropping the Bears to 4-2 in conference play.

Meanwhile, Kansas improved to 5-1 in the Big 12 and remained firmly in the championship race. No. 22 Cincinnati and No. 4 Arizona State continued to lead the conference standings at 6-0.
