DETROIT, MI — The Detroit Tigers celebrated the Fourth of July with some fireworks of their own, launching five home runs in an 11-7 victory over the struggling New York Mets at Comerica Park.

Josh Lowe accounted for two of Detroit’s five homers, belting a pair of solo shots to raise his season total to eight. Kerry Carpenter, Dillon Dingler, and Gavin Lux also went deep as the Tigers overwhelmed New York’s pitching staff.

The Mets came out swinging, scoring three runs in the first inning. Detroit responded with four runs over the first two frames, but New York battled back to eventually pull even at 4-4.

Tigers starter Jackson Jobe labored through 5⅔ innings, allowing four runs before departing with the game tied. Tyler Holton recorded the final out of the sixth and was in line for the victory when Detroit’s offense took over.

The Tigers scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead, then erupted for four more runs in the seventh to build a commanding 10-4 advantage.

New York wasn’t finished.

Hunter Harvey struggled after entering in the eighth, surrendering three runs as the Mets quickly cut Detroit’s lead to 10-7. Bryan Hurter replaced Harvey and recorded the final out to end the threat.

Lowe then provided some additional breathing room in the bottom half, launching his second home run of the game to extend Detroit’s lead to 11-7.

Mets starter Clay Holmes allowed four runs on five hits over five innings but escaped with a no-decision. New York’s bullpen surrendered seven runs after his departure, with Dedniel Núñez taking the loss after allowing two runs in ⅔ of an inning.

AS IT STANDS…

The victory extended the Tigers’ winning streak to three games as they prepare to face the Mets again tomorrow at Comerica Park.

Following the New York series, Detroit heads on the road for its final two series before the All-Star break, visiting the Miami Marlins and Toronto Blue Jays.
