CLEVELAND, OH — The Detroit Tigers closed out their three-game series with a 6-1 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Jackie Robinson Day, pulling into a tie for first place in the AL Central.

Reese Olson turned in his best outing of the young season, allowing just one run over seven innings while scattering seven hits and striking out eight. The victory improved the right-hander to 2-1.

Detroit’s offense was led by Kerry Carpenter, who enjoyed a 4-for-5 afternoon. Carpenter scored on Javier Báez’shome run in the fifth before adding a solo blast of his own an inning later to help the Tigers pull away.

Cleveland’s lone run came in the second inning when Austin Hays delivered an RBI hit, but the Guardians managed little else against Olson and the Detroit pitching staff.

Guardians starter Gavin Williams struggled to keep the Tigers’ lineup in check. He allowed four runs on 10 hits over 4⅓ innings, falling to 2-2 on the season.

AS IT STANDS…

The victory moved Detroit into a first-place tie with Cleveland, with both clubs sitting at 13-6 atop the AL Central. The Chicago White Sox remained just a half-game behind after extending their winning streak to seven games.
