One week after opening the season with a convincing 49-30 victory over Virginia Tech, No. 8 Fighting Irish were brought back to earth by the Panthers, who handed the Irish a 28-20 road loss.
Freshman quarterback Stephen Keisel completed 17 of 33 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns but struggled against an aggressive Pitt defense that consistently disrupted Notre Dame’s offense.
The loss dropped the Fighting Irish 14 spots to No. 22. Notre Dame’s schedule doesn’t get any easier, as the Irish return home next week to host No. 9 Texas Longhorns.

Auburn 10, Arkansas 3
No. 7 Razorbacks couldn’t generate enough offense in a defensive struggle, falling 10-3 to the Tigers.
Quarterback KJ Jackson endured a difficult afternoon, getting sacked five times while throwing one interception and failing to account for a touchdown. Arkansas was held out of the end zone, with its only points coming on a field goal.
The game’s lone touchdown came in the third quarter when Auburn quarterback Deuce Knight connected with fellow junior Adrian Bullitt for the decisive score.
The defeat dropped Arkansas five spots to No. 12.
West Virginia 27, Tennessee 15
The Mountaineers stunned No. 6 Volunteers, building a commanding lead before holding off a late rally for a 27-15 victory.
West Virginia dominated the first three quarters, racing to a 24-0 advantage before Tennessee finally found the end zone in the fourth quarter. The Volunteers scored 15 late points, but the comeback came too late.
Sophomore quarterback Devonte Yarbrough was held without a touchdown pass as Tennessee’s offense struggled to find rhythm throughout the afternoon.
The loss sent the Volunteers tumbling 10 spots to No. 16 in the latest rankings.
