DETROIT, MI — Tarik Skubal earned his ninth victory of the season as the Detroit Tigers continued their recent dominance of the New York Yankees, defeating them 6-2 at Comerica Park.

The reigning AL Cy Young winner, and a contender to capture the award again this season, pitched into the seventh inning. Skubal allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out eight, giving Detroit another strong outing from its ace.

The Tigers (50-36) gave him an early cushion in the third.

Gavin Lux opened the scoring with his ninth home run of the season, and Riley Greene followed with a towering 446-foot solo blast to right, quickly putting Detroit ahead 2-0.

An inning later, Josh Lowe lined a two-out RBI single to left to extend the advantage to 3-0, giving Skubal all the run support he would need.

The Yankees (47-37) finally broke through in the fifth when Aaron Judge lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Ryan McMahon. New York struck again in the seventh as Mike Trout singled to center to bring home McMahon for a second time, but the Yankees could get no closer.

Detroit’s offense added three more runs to put the game away and secure its fourth victory over New York in less than two weeks.

Clarke Schmidt (2-7) took the loss for the Yankees after allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits over four innings. He failed to record a strikeout.

The victory continued an impressive stretch for the Tigers against one of the American League’s top clubs, with Detroit now having won four of its last five meetings against New York.
