Lyle Foster gave South Africa an early lead by converting a penalty kick in the eighth minute after Switzerland committed a foul inside the box. Switzerland finally found the equalizer in the 76th minute when Remo Freuler scored his first goal of the tournament. Locked at 1-1 after 90 minutes, Evidence Makgopa put Bafana Bafana back in front with a strike in the 96th minute. Switzerland could not answer, and Makgopa sealed South Africa’s place in the quarterfinals with his second goal in the 120th minute.
Netherlands 2, Morocco 0
The Netherlands had an early goal disallowed for offside in the 17th minute, but the Flying Dutchmen eventually broke through in first-half stoppage time. Cody Gakpo calmly converted a penalty after a Moroccan defender handled the ball inside the box to give the Dutch a 1-0 lead. Donyell Malen added an insurance goal in the 65th minute to send Moroccohome.
Brazil 5, Japan 0
Brazil cruised into the quarterfinals behind a dominant attacking display led by Raphinha, who scored a hat trick with goals in the 10th, 27th, and 74th minutes. Vinícius Júnior added two goals of his own as Japan had no answer for the Brazilian attack in a comfortable 5-0 rout.
