The United States Men’s National Team is headed to the World Cup semifinals after defeating Colombia 3-2 in extra time, with Christian Pulisic converting the match-winning penalty following a costly Colombian handball.

Colombia struck first just four minutes into the match when Luis Díaz unleashed a long-range shot that found its way through a crowd of American defenders and into the net.

The United States responded in the 32nd minute as Malik Tillman buried the equalizer, but Colombia quickly reclaimed the lead. James Rodríguez restored the advantage in the 36th minute, sending Los Cafeteros into halftime ahead 2-1.

The Americans came out aggressively after the break and were rewarded in the 49th minute when Folarin Balogun found the back of the net to level the match at 2-2.

Neither side could find a winner over the remainder of regulation, sending the match into extra time.

Just before the end of the first extra-time period, the breakthrough finally came for the United States. During a U.S. corner kick, Colombian defender Jhon Lucumí was whistled for a handball after the ball struck his arm inside the penalty area. Pulisic stepped to the spot in the 105th minute and calmly buried the penalty into the upper-right corner, giving the Americans a 3-2 lead.

Colombia threw numbers forward throughout the second half of extra time, but the American defense held firm to preserve the victory and send the United States into the World Cup semifinals.

The win by the U.S. sets up a showdown with France.
