WINNIPEG, MB — Gustav Nyquist and defenseman Neal Pionk each scored twice to lead the Winnipeg Jets to a 5-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks at Canada Life Centre.
After a scoreless first period, the offense erupted in the second. Nyquist opened the scoring 3:05 into the frame and struck again less than two minutes later to give Winnipeg a 2-0 lead.
Vancouver responded before intermission. Quinn Hughes netted his 11th of the season, and Nils Höglander followed with his 10th, sending the teams into the third period tied 2-2.
That’s when Pionk took over. Just 1:20 into the final period, he blasted a shot from the high slot past Thatcher Demkoinside the right post to restore the Jets’ lead at 3-2. Vancouver pulled their goalie late, but Winnipeg capitalized with two empty-net goals to seal the win.
Connor Hellebuyck made 23 saves to earn his 30th victory of the season. Demko (26-19-5) stopped 29 shots in the loss.
AS IT STANDS…
The win lifts Winnipeg to 32-21-9 (73 points), good for second place in the Central Division behind Colorado (76 points). In the Western Conference, the Jets sit fourth and hold a nine-point cushion over the ninth-place Chicago Blackhawks.
