CHICAGO, IL — Jackson Jobe delivered the best start of his young season, striking out 13 batters over seven dominant innings as the Detroit Tigers rolled past the Chicago Cubs 8-1 in the final game of May at Wrigley Field.

Detroit wasted little time taking control.

The Tigers scored three runs in the first inning, beginning with an RBI double by Kerry Carpenter before Colt Keith crushed a two-run home run off Cubs starter Edward Cabrera to stake Detroit to a 3-0 lead.

Jobe opened his afternoon by striking out Matt Shaw, but his only mistake came moments later when Michael Busch launched a 462-foot solo home run to center. The right-hander quickly settled in, retiring the Cubs with ease while piling up 12 more strikeouts and allowing just four hits over the remainder of his outing.

Detroit continued to add on in the second. Riley Greene lifted a sacrifice fly to score Dillon Dingler, and Carpenter followed with a two-run home run to extend the lead to 6-1. The early barrage chased Cabrera after just 1⅔ innings.

The Tigers added another run in the seventh when Keith lifted a sacrifice fly to right, extending the lead to 7-1. Detroit tacked on one final insurance run in the ninth to complete the 8-1 victory.

Carpenter finished a perfect 4-for-4 with a home run, double, and three RBIs, while Keith went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs.

Jobe improved to 6-4 after allowing one run on four hits while striking out 13 over seven innings.

AS IT STANDS…

The victory was a timely one for the Tigers, who cooled off after a strong start to May by dropping their final two series of the month to Boston and Seattle. Detroit enters June at 35-26, just a half-game behind the first-place Cleveland Guardians (36-26), who finished the month by going 6-4 over their last 10 games.
