COLUMBUS, OH — The Winnipeg Jets squandered a two-goal lead for the second straight game, this time falling 3-2 in overtime to the Columbus Blue Jackets after Damon Severson scored the game-winner with just 36 seconds remaining in the extra period at State Farm Arena.
The defeat capped a frustrating end to October for Winnipeg, which also watched a 2-0 lead disappear in a 5-2 loss to Carolina earlier in the week.
The Jets appeared to be in control early. Mark Scheifele opened the scoring in the first period with his second goal of the season before offseason free-agent addition Ryan Poehling doubled the advantage in the second period to make it 2-0.
Columbus gradually clawed its way back.
Mikael Backlund got the Blue Jackets on the board before Kent Johnson netted his first goal of the season later in the period to even the score at 2-2 and force overtime.
With the game seemingly headed for a shootout, Severson carried the puck down the right side and snapped a shot that beat Connor Hellebuyck high on the glove side with 36 seconds left, handing the Jets their second consecutive defeat.

The Jets closed the opening month of the season with a 5-3-1 record (11 points), good for second place in the Central Division, six points behind the Colorado Avalanche, and fifth in the Western Conference.
