Just two weeks into the 2027 season, several playoff hopefuls have already been dealt major blows as injuries continue to sideline some of baseball’s biggest stars.

Suárez’s hot start comes to a halt

After one of the best Spring Training performances in baseball, Eugenio Suárez’s regular season barely got underway before it was interrupted.

The Phillies’ marquee free-agent signing suffered a fractured wrist in Philadelphia’s Opening Day loss to St. Louis after making just four plate appearances. He is expected to miss one to two months, dealing an early blow to a lineup that was counting on him to replace much of the production lost when Bryce Harper was traded to the Dodgers.

Dodgers lose Betts

The Los Angeles Dodgers were dealt another significant setback on April 9 when nine-time All-Star Mookie Betts was placed on the 60-day injured list with a fractured leg suffered against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Before the injury, Betts had appeared in 13 games, batting in the heart of the Dodgers’ lineup while collecting three home runs and 11 RBIs.

Yankees lose Trout

Perhaps the biggest injury of the young season belongs to the New York Yankees.

Offseason acquisition Mike Trout, who arrived in a blockbuster trade from the Los Angeles Angels, was placed on the injured list with a fractured arm and is expected to miss one to two months.

Through 14 games, Trout had already made a tremendous impact, batting .273 with six home runs, 11 RBIs, and a 1.003 OPS.

Around the league

Several other notable injuries have also surfaced across the majors:

• Mike Yastrzemski, LF (New York Mets) — Fractured hand, expected to miss 1-2 months.
• Wyatt Langford, LF (Texas Rangers) — Separated shoulder, expected to miss 2-3 months.
• Zack Gelof, 2B (Athletics) — Recovering from a dislocated shoulder suffered during Spring Training and expected to return in approximately two weeks.
• Harrison Bader, CF (San Francisco Giants) — Broken ankle, expected to miss 3-4 weeks.

Impact on the standings

Despite losing Trout, the Yankees (11-9) have climbed into first place in the AL East, aided by the Tampa Bay Rays’ six-game losing streak that dropped them to 9-11.

The Dodgers (13-8) have managed to weather Betts’ absence and currently share first place in the NL West with the San Francisco Giants.

The Phillies (7-14), meanwhile, have stumbled to third place in the NL East, sitting 3½ games out of first. Fortunately for Philadelphia, no team has created much separation, leaving plenty of opportunity to climb back into contention once Suárez returns.
