NEW YORK, NY — The New York Mets broke it open late to defeat the Cincinnati Reds 8-0 at Citi Field, securing the series two games to one.

Jared Young provided the early spark with a third-inning homer, and the Mets added on from there, winning their sixth of the last ten as they chase the first-place Miami Marlins, who lead by 1.5 games.

Cincinnati created opportunities but failed to convert, stranding 13 runners while undone by poor baserunning and a lack of timely hitting.

Clay Holmes (2-1) went five scoreless innings, allowing seven hits and striking out three, with three relievers finishing the shutout. Hunter Greene was sharp for the Reds, tossing six innings of two-run ball with seven strikeouts, but received little support.

The game turned decisively late. After JoJo Romero allowed a run, Tony Santillan was hit hard, giving up six hits and five runs in just one inning.

At the plate, Juan Soto homered and doubled, while Marcus Semien added a double and two RBI alongside Young’s early blast.

Despite the loss, the Reds remain two games ahead of the Pittsburgh Pirates and four ahead of the Chicago Cubs in the division.
