LAKELAND, FL — One day after opening Spring Training with an 8-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles, the Detroit Tigers responded in emphatic fashion, blasting four home runs in a 9-3 rout at Joker Marchant Stadium.

Riley Greene powered the offense with his first two home runs of the spring, while Colt Keith and Kerry Carpenteralso went deep as Detroit collected 12 hits.

The game also marked the Tigers debut of prized offseason acquisition Freddy Peralta, who signed a six-year, $197.0 million contract after arriving from the Mets organization. Peralta retired the side in order in the first inning before encountering trouble in the second. Colton Cowser led off with a solo homer, and after a walk to Adley Rutschman, Jordan Westburg delivered an RBI triple to trim Detroit’s early lead.

Peralta settled down from there, recording the final two outs of the inning and finishing his afternoon having allowed just two runs over three innings.

Detroit reclaimed control in the bottom of the third when Greene launched a 414-foot, two-run shot to right-center, scoring Gavin Lux to give the Tigers a 4-2 advantage. Greene later added his second homer of the afternoon, continuing his strong start to the spring.

Baltimore pulled within 4-3 in the fourth, but the Tigers bullpen shut the door the rest of the way.

Detroit broke the game open with a five-run eighth inning. Carpenter’s solo homer started the rally before Yandy Díazlined an RBI single and Brandon Lowe capped the scoring with a two-run double, sending the Tigers to their first victory of the spring.
