WINNIPEG — The New Jersey Devils are Stanley Cup champions after a stunning finish to Game 6 at Canada Life Centre, defeating the Winnipeg Jets 5-4 in overtime to capture the series in six games.

For a brief moment, it appeared Winnipeg had forced a decisive Game 7.

Trailing 3-1 entering the third period, the Jets mounted an incredible comeback, scoring three unanswered goals and taking a 4-3 lead with just 45 seconds remaining in regulation. But everything unraveled moments later.

With Mark Scheifele serving a late cross-checking penalty, the Devils pulled their goalie to create a 6-on-4 advantage. New Jersey capitalized when Timo Meier buried the tying goal with 17 seconds left, silencing the Winnipeg crowd and forcing overtime.

The extra period lasted only six seconds.

New Jersey won the opening faceoff, and Jesper Bratt carried the puck into the offensive zone before sliding a pass into the slot for Jack Hughes, who ripped home the Stanley Cup-winning goal before Connor Hellebuyck could react.

The dramatic ending overshadowed Winnipeg’s remarkable third-period rally and highlighted the difference in discipline between the teams. After taking the late lead, the Jets failed to close out the game, while the Devils once again punished mistakes on the power play.

New Jersey converted three of five power-play opportunities in Game 6 and continued to impose its physical style, out-hitting Winnipeg 28-16.

Nico Hischier was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP after recording 11 goals and 17 assists for 28 points while also contributing 23 hits during New Jersey’s championship run.
