The United States Men’s National Team advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals behind a brilliant performance from Tyler Adams, whose hat trick powered the Americans to a 3-2 victory over Egypt.

Adams opened the scoring in the 22nd minute after Folarin Balogun squared a pass across the penalty area for an easy finish. Egypt answered 13 minutes later when Trezeguet found the equalizer, but Adams restored the Americans’ lead just before halftime with his second goal in the 43rd minute.

Adams completed his hat trick in the 60th minute, giving the United States a 3-1 advantage that appeared to put the match out of reach.

Egypt refused to go quietly. In the 83rd minute, Mohamed Salah slipped a close-range shot past goalkeeper Matt Freese to cut the deficit to 3-2 and set up a tense finish.

The Americans responded by bringing on three defensive substitutes and successfully weathered Egypt’s late pressure to preserve the victory.

The statistics reflected how evenly contested the match was. The United States held a 60-40 edge in possession, but Egypt generated 3.2 expected goals compared to the Americans’ 3.1 and placed six of its 10 shots on target. The U.S. finished with seven shots, four of which tested the goalkeeper.

The victory sends the United States into the quarterfinals, where it will face Colombia, which earlier pulled off a stunning upset by eliminating Argentina.
